This map contains information on the Trans-European Rail Network, as defined by the AGC and AGTC agreements. It is divided into two separate datasets, each focusing the contained parameters to either Freight or Passenger aspects of the rail lines.
The Freight Network (All source data)
The Passenger Network (All source data)
The boundaries and names shown and the designations used on this map do not imply official endorsement or acceptance by the United Nations.
This application shows a map background with an outline of Europe and parts of Asia which contain the railway corridors as defined by the relevant agreements.
There are two main aspects of the map, one focusing on freight and the other on passenger railways. The networks may differ slightly in the values of parameters assigned, as well as individual sections of lines, as extracted from the original source data collections.
The map spans the whole window of the webpage, with a sidebar pane to the left containing the main functions, and a bottom pane for tables. The sidebar can be collapsed and expanded using a button at its top.
The network which will be shown can be switched in the main sidebar. The map can be panned by dragging it with the mouse while clicking its left button anywhere on the background. Zoom in or out using buttons at the top of the map next to the sidebar or the mouse wheel.
Note that no control settings, searches or actions done by the user are remembered by the application over repeated visits to its site. Reloading the page will lose any such changes made thus far.
The selected map, panning and zoom level are reflected in the URL of the application, which is shown in the browser address bar. Copying, bookmarking and revisiting the same address will show the same view.
The Layers and Columns tab of the sidebar controls the three layers of the map:
Found routes are also displayed as separate layers in the list. Clicking on the checkbox next to a layer controls its visibility.
Below the layer control, there is a list of line properties that are collected in the application's database for each section. Selecting one of these parameters (shown to the left of the parameter name) colorizes the map lines by their values for this parameter.
A legend below the list indicates the categories and their respective coloring. The individual categories can be deselected, making matching lines show fainter on the map. As a special case, for the AGC/AGTC corridor parameter, the corridor and color assignment can be controlled by adding individual items to the legend.
To the right of each line parameter, a checkbox indicates whether this parameter will be used in popups and tables. Select columns of interest in order to show only the data relevant to the current use case.
Hovering over a Node or Line on the map displays a tooltip with basic information on the feature. For lines, the selected coloring parameter is displayed in the tooltip.
Left-clicking on a feature will show some details on it in a small popup - the selected line parameter columns will be those shown there.
Right-clicking on a feature will show all available details on it, by switching the sidebar to its Properties tab. If the selected feature is a Node, a button is enabled to set the node as the origin or destination for route searches, switching to the Route Search tab.
The Route Search tab of the sidebar is used to search for nodes from the Nodes layer (i.e., only those same nodes as displayable on the map).
Once a node is found, the map pans to show it in a small red circle. The buttons to set the found node as origin or destination for route search are also enabled when the node is found.
Given that both endpoints of a route search are defined, the shortest route on the network may be searched for. If a result is found, it is added as a new layer to the map, and also listed in a table of routes. A short message is shown below the form with the result of the search.
Clicking on a found route's row displays some details on the route, mainly its Operating Parameters, which are the values of some line parameters which are the most constraining the route from all sections.
Each route row in the table also has two buttons. where either the routes' data can be pushed into a table, or the route removed from the map.
A table can be created from all Nodes or Lines in the network, with the enabled line columns, along with a fixed set of other feature properties. It is recommended to keep the number of enabled columns small if possible.
Creating a table for all layer features can be done from the Layers and Columns tab, while found routes have this button in the found route row of the Route Search tab.
One table is displayed at a time, as selected by the dropdown in the table view at the bottom of the map window.
Each table can be exported by clicking the Export button next to table
selection dropbox. A file link is added next to it. The file is constructed
from the displayed data, with columns separated by the TAB
character.
Clicking the link shall download the file using the normal browser behavior,
possibly asking for a destination directory or filename for the download.
There are also two minor features controlled by buttons on the top-right side of the map.
The measure function can be used to determine approximate distances on the map. Once measuring is enabled, click on the map to select a waypoint for the measure.
The printing function puts the map application in a view mode suitable for printing. The print settings and actual printing is a browser function, and is affected by the available resources on the user's machine. Refer to the browsers help for information on how to use it for printing.
